The Clemson Experience
This research is about creating the emotion, thrill, and experience of a Clemson University athletic event without actually setting a foot on the campus. In other words, you are gaining the first person insight of the Clemson experience at the Little John Coliseum during an athletic event. Just imagine putting on virtual reality goggles and being immersed in the Clemson University athletic environment within a matter of seconds. This virtual athletic experience was created using the Unity 3D and Oculus Rift visualization tools. Unity 3D creates the 3D environment of Clemson University and Oculus Rift allows the user to be immersed into that 3D environment. Materials, textures, audio, animation, and videos have been implemented for the 3D Little John Coliseum environment to make the virtual experience as realistic as possible. The “Clemson Experience” can be used for recruiting student-athletes, fundraising, increasing ticket sales, and other purposes. Successful virtual reality experiences with athletics will open opportunities for use in other academic areas including marketing and architecture. Users would have an immersive experience in a realistic environment. The Oculus Rift visualization has an advantage over 2D, 3D model, and 3D interactive models because it can replicate an almost “real” environment experience virtually. A survey of users has been conducted and future work will include untethered viewing.
